Do you own a Movado watch? Ever wondered how such an iconic design came to be?

Well, the company was created in 1881 by Achille Ditesheim when he was only 19 years old. From those early beginnings in the La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the company has become one of the worlds leaders in wristwatch design and innovation.

From the early start with only 6 employees Ditesheim stuck relentlessly to his concept of quality and innovation and this led the company to win many awards at the Universal Exhibitions in Paris including a prestigious silver medal in 1900. In 1912 a Movado watch was created, and patented, with an unusually complex movement that was ‘shaped’ to fit the curve of a persons wrist. They later engaged famous artists such as Andy Warhol to design unique limited edition Movado watches.

In the 1950’s they produced the KingMatic which had an automatic winding mechanism and a second hand on the same central spindle as the hour and minute hands. The KingMatic has been relaunched recently and brings the original features bang up to date with the modern technologies but retains the classic Movado watch designs.

In 1960 Hewitt’s original museum watch design was judged as so iconic it was selected to be displayed in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This and many other artist designed wristwatches still reside in museum collections around the world. It was this that prompted the now well known dial configuration being known as the historical center watch and has now advanced into a total accumulation of people’s Movado watches.
